Dota 2 – Game Review

Dota 2 is a multiplayer real-time strategy game with RPG elements. It is a continuation of the world famous mod DotA (“Defense of the Ancients” – defense of the Ancients) for the game Warcraft III. The mod is so popular that a new genre has appeared in the gaming industry – Action-RTS, with a large number of “clones”, both successful and not.

Dota 2 - Game Review

The gameplay is a competition between two teams of three or five people. One team is the Light Side, the other is the Dark Side. Each side has its own set of heroes.

Each player can control only one unit or, in other words, his own hero. As the game progresses, the hero gains experience, thereby increasing his level. He can also earn gold. Besides the fact that he regularly receives in small quantities from his base, he can mine gold by killing opponents.

Killing heroes is worth significantly more gold than killing an enemy creep. In addition, the hero can collect and buy various items that affect his strength and development, as well as provide additional benefits.

In the course of the game, you have to fight not only with the opposing side, but also repel the regular attacks of the creeps, controlled by the computer. The main task is to keep the defense of your own base, to destroy the main building of the base of the enemy side.

In addition, heroes can disperse throughout the territory and fight neutral monsters.

Hero development

Dota 2 - Game Review

Heroes are divided into subclasses: magicians, dodgers and security forces. In the original mod there are just over a hundred of them, in Dota 2 there are 47 so far, but new ones are regularly added.

During the game, the hero gains experience, develops abilities, hones skills, which raises the player’s level. Therefore, it is quite natural that, thanks to their game knowledge and acquired skills, experienced players significantly dominate newcomers. By earning upgrades, the hero can gain a wide range of additional opportunities. For example, combine collected items into artifacts with great strength and power. Such artifacts bring the player thousands of health points, and also endow him with the ability to inflict super-powerful attacks that destroy the enemy.

Such artifacts are an important component of the combat potential of both the hero and his team as a whole.

In general, items, skills and branches of improvement remained unchanged compared to the DotA mod, except that some player skills work better, because freed themselves from the “ancient” Warcraft engine.

Experience (and a certain amount of game currency) can be earned by destroying enemy buildings, killing enemy heroes and creeps or computer-controlled creeps. The stronger the creep, the greater the reward.

The higher the player’s level, the stronger the damage done to him, the more he gets health, protection and mana.

For killing one unit of the enemy side (no matter a creep or a hero), all team members who are nearby receive experience. The player who struck the last blow also receives a certain amount of money for experience.

However, no matter how experienced and skillful the hero is, team interaction remains the main thing. By himself, even with a certain amount of influence, he can do little.

In addition, one of the innovations is the ability to receive in-game rewards. You can get them for creating a high-quality “guide” for the game, describing interesting strategies, posting useful and constructive comments on the game.

Viewers, replays, statistics

Now, you can not only play, but also watch other people’s games. Both in real time (by connecting the viewer to the game) and watching replays. Separately, I would like to mention the huge statistics that are now available for viewing: graphs of the total gold of teams, experience and gold for heroes, which hero killed how many, how many times he died, etc.

Disadvantages and Benefits

Dota 2 - Game Review

No sooner had the game been released than the gaming community split into two fronts – those who are completely happy with the new version of the game, and those who are dissatisfied with almost everything – new graphics, lack of innovations in gameplay, etc.

The main disadvantages of the game are:

  • flaw in visual effects (for example, the ridiculous ult Lich)
  • reduction of time to 3 minutes between hero buyouts (in DotA – 4 minutes)
  • flaw in the hero panel
  • lack of a mana bar for enemy heroes
  • unfinished rating system
  • there is no way to pause the game
  • there is no possibility of a quick finish

The undoubted advantages of the game include:

  • observation mode
  • wonderfully designed hero models
  • saving statistics of replays (any replays can be loaded and analyzed)
  • Availability of Practice Mode in the game
  • voice acting of the game (each event is accompanied by a corresponding commentary)
  • conveniently organized store
  • creation of a convenient gaming platform Steam
  • improved graphics
